Kelp DAO Breach: $292 Million Stolen in Latest Crypto Heist
A significant exploit has occurred in the cryptocurrency space, with Kelp DAO, a liquid restaking protocol, being drained of approximately $292 million. The breach involved an attacker manipulating the cross-chain messaging layer, LayerZero, to trick the Kelp DAO bridge into releasing 116,500 rsETH (restaked ether) to an attacker-controlled address. This incident has raised concerns about the potential for organized hacking efforts, particularly those linked to North Korea. The attack has also affected Aave, a decentralized lending platform, which has been left exposed to collateral with impaired backing. In response to the breach, Aave has taken steps to contain the risk, including freezing rsETH markets and halting new borrowing against the asset. Meanwhile, Coinbase has commissioned a report highlighting the potential risks of quantum computing to the cryptocurrency industry, emphasizing the need for preparation and caution. The report notes that while current quantum computers are not powerful enough to break the cryptography underpinning major crypto networks, the development of a fault-tolerant quantum computer could pose a significant threat in the future.
