Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal
The bitcoin price, currently at $78,068.51, has surpassed the $78,000 threshold, boosting the overall cryptocurrency market. This development follows improved risk sentiment after US President Donald Trump extended the Iran ceasefire, with stock index futures also experiencing gains. After weeks of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000 in March and early April, bitcoin's upward movement has finally provided momentum traders with the confirmation they were waiting for. Momentum traders typically invest when an upward trend is evident, and bitcoin's recent surge could attract more buyers, further amplifying the momentum. According to analysts at Marex, the market's prolonged stagnation between $65 and $75 has ended, which is significant as it alters investor behavior. Sellers who previously sold rallies above $74 must now reassess their strategy, while momentum buyers have finally received the confirmation they needed. On-chain data also supports this trend, with the number of coins held in wallets linked to centralized exchanges dropping to a multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to CryptoQuant. This indicates continued investor accumulation, potentially leading to a supply shock. Delta Exchange noted that the diminishing bitcoin supply on exchanges, with fewer coins available for sale and more being transferred to long-term holders, is resulting in increased scarcity and potential volatility. However, QCP Capital advises caution due to the persistent relative richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit, which are used to hedge against potential price drops. The firm believes that crypto trends are currently tied to oil prices and interest rate expectations. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90 after rebounding from a low of $78 on Friday. Meanwhile, DeFi security risks persist, with the Sui-based Volo protocol being drained of over $3 million, highlighting the need for continued vigilance.
