Ethereum Sees Record-Breaking Quarter, Marking a Significant Three-Year Rebound

The world's largest smart contract blockchain, Ethereum, has just experienced its busiest quarter on record, yet its token's price remains unaffected. According to Artemis data, the network's base layer processed 200.4 million transactions in Q1 2026, a first-time achievement and a significant increase from the 90 million transactions recorded in 2023. This growth can be attributed to the recovery that began in mid-2025, with each quarter showing higher activity than the last, resulting in a 43% increase from Q4 2025. The Ethereum blockchain is a decentralized system that enables the automatic execution of agreements without intermediaries, securely processing and recording actions such as sending ether, interacting with smart contracts, or transferring tokens. The surge in activity is largely driven by Layer 2s and stablecoins, with the total supply of stablecoins on Ethereum reaching a record $180 billion, accounting for approximately 60% of the global stablecoin market. While this growth may present an opportunity for traders, some analysts warn that Layer 2 activity may mask base-layer fee pressure, and the true test of Ethereum's recovery will depend on whether the growth is driven by genuine onboarding or bot activity.
