Bitcoin Developers Propose Quantum Defenses, Potentially Freezing Vulnerable Coins
The Bitcoin network, built on the promise of secure and private transactions, is facing a new challenge from the developer community. A recently updated proposal, Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP)-361, aims to introduce a mechanism to protect against potential quantum computer attacks that could compromise the Bitcoin blockchain. This proposal, put forward by Jameson Loop and other cryptographers, suggests forcing bitcoin holders to migrate their coins to new quantum-resistant addresses or risk having them frozen permanently by the network. The proposal is designed to defend against the risk of quantum computers, which could potentially reverse-engineer private keys and drain funds from vulnerable addresses. According to a recent Google report, a sufficiently powerful quantum machine could compromise the Bitcoin blockchain with less firepower than initially estimated, prompting concerns about a potential 'quantum deadline' for bitcoin in 2029. The proposal outlines a three-phase plan for migration, starting with blocking new bitcoin from being sent to old-style, quantum-vulnerable addresses, followed by rendering old-style signatures invalid, and finally, a potential rescue phase using zero-knowledge proofs to recover frozen coins. However, the community has expressed concerns about the proposal, citing its potential to override one of Bitcoin's fundamental principles: sovereign, permissionless control over funds. While developers view the proposal as a defensive measure, others see it as authoritarian and confiscatory, sparking a debate about the best approach to protecting the Bitcoin ecosystem against quantum threats.
