Ethereum Co-Founder Joseph Lubin Highlights the Dangers of AI Domination by Big Tech
The cryptocurrency landscape is on the cusp of a significant transformation driven by artificial intelligence (AI), according to Joseph Lubin, CEO of Consensys and co-founder of Ethereum. In a recent interview, Lubin emphasized that autonomous agents can facilitate transactions, coordination, and verification on decentralized networks, leveraging crypto infrastructure as the foundation for machine-driven activities. He envisions a future where increasingly intelligent interfaces simplify complexity, enabling users to interact with crypto systems through intent rather than manual inputs, with AI serving as an intermediary layer between humans and protocols. However, Lubin warns that if AI infrastructure remains concentrated among a few large tech firms, it could pose significant risks. He stresses the importance of decentralized systems and cryptography in ensuring accountability and facilitating transparent, verifiable environments where machines can 'check on one another.' The evolution of products like MetaMask, a Consensys offering, reflects this shift, with the wallet being rebuilt as a 'personal money operating system' that users own and control. AI-powered agents could manage assets, execute transactions, and navigate the growing decentralized economy on behalf of users. Lubin also discussed the rise of 'corporate chains' on Ethereum, where companies seek higher throughput and greater control over their infrastructure. He believes that assets are best issued on Ethereum's base layer to ensure durability, even if they are used across other networks. Stablecoins, a rapidly growing sector, are seen as a 'stepping stone' toward more fully decentralized financial systems, with Lubin expecting growth in decentralized collateral to enable more robust, crypto-native forms of money. The convergence of traditional finance and decentralized finance is anticipated to result in a more granular and programmable global economy. While addressing technical risks like quantum computing, Lubin adopted a measured tone, stating that Ethereum developers have been preparing for years and view it as part of the natural evolution of Ethereum.
