Ethereum Achieves Record-Breaking Quarter, Marking a Three-Year Resurgence
The world's largest smart contract blockchain, Ethereum, has just experienced its most active quarter on record, with its token price remaining unchanged. According to Artemis data, the network processed 200.4 million transactions on its base layer in Q1 2026, marking the first time it has surpassed this threshold in a single quarter. The quarterly transaction count had previously bottomed out near 90 million in 2023, before stabilizing between 100 million and 120 million for most of 2024. Ethereum's smart contract blockchain is a decentralized system that enables the automatic execution of agreements without the need for intermediaries. Transactions on Ethereum are secure records of actions, such as sending ether (ETH), interacting with smart contracts, or transferring tokens, which are imprinted on the blockchain. The recovery in Ethereum's on-chain activity began in mid-2025, with each successive quarter seeing higher activity than the last, resulting in a 43% increase in Q1 2026 compared to Q4 2025's 145 million. Despite this growth, Ethereum's native token ether has declined by over 50% from its August 2025 high of nearly $5,000, presenting a potential opportunity for traders. Most of the network's traffic is driven by Layer 2s, which are separate networks built on top of Ethereum that process transactions at a lower cost before batching them to the main chain for settlement. Stablecoins, which are tokenized versions of fiat currencies, are also being widely used on Ethereum, with the total supply reaching a record $180 billion, accounting for approximately 60% of the global stablecoin market. Both trends contribute to higher transaction counts on the base layer through settlement and bridging activity. However, some analysts have flagged the risk that L2 activity may mask base-layer fee pressure, as Ethereum earns less per transaction following the Dencun upgrade. The broader outlook suggests that Ethereum's usage has completed a multi-year recovery, which typically precedes price movement.
