World, a digital identity project backed by Sam Altman, has launched a major upgrade to its World ID system, aimed at providing 'full-stack proof of human' infrastructure for consumers, enterprises, and AI agents. The upgrade, announced in San Francisco, is a response to growing concerns over bots, deepfakes, and AI agents impersonating humans online. World's system uses custom-built 'Orb' devices to establish proof of humanity, scanning users' faces and irises to generate a unique cryptographic code. The company has introduced a redesigned architecture to improve privacy, security, and usability, with new features including account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app is also being introduced, allowing users to manage credentials and authenticate across platforms. World is expanding its partnerships with platforms such as Tinder, Zoom, and Docusign, and is working with companies including Okta, Vercel, and Browserbase to establish a trust layer for automated workflows. The project aims to make proof-of-human identity as seamless as logging into a social media account, and to provide a solution to the growing problem of bots and deepfakes online.
