The World digital identity project, backed by Sam Altman, has announced a significant upgrade to its World ID system, introducing a 'full-stack proof of human' infrastructure designed for consumers, enterprises, and AI agents. This overhaul aims to address growing concerns over bots and deepfakes impersonating humans online. The system utilizes custom-built 'Orb' devices to establish proof of humanity, requiring users to visit an Orb in person for face and iris scanning to generate a unique cryptographic code. The update features a redesigned architecture focusing on improved privacy, security, and usability, including account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app is also being introduced to allow users to manage credentials and authenticate across platforms seamlessly. The company is expanding its partnerships with various platforms, including Tinder, Zoom, and Docusign, to embed its identity layer and combat issues like scalper bots and deepfakes. This move is part of a broader ambition to make proof-of-human identity as effortless as social media login.
