World, a digital identity project backed by Sam Altman, has introduced a major upgrade to its World ID system, aiming to provide 'full-stack proof of human' infrastructure for consumers, enterprises, and AI agents. The upgrade, announced in San Francisco, focuses on combating the growing concerns of bots, deepfakes, and AI agents impersonating humans online. The system relies on custom-built 'Orb' devices that use facial and iris scanning to generate a unique cryptographic code, providing a credential that proves someone is a unique human online without revealing their identity. The update features a redesigned architecture to improve privacy, security, and usability, including account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app is also being introduced to allow users to manage credentials and authenticate across platforms. The company is expanding its partnerships with platforms like Tinder, Zoom, and Docusign to embed its identity layer across consumer and enterprise platforms, aiming to make proof-of-human identity as seamless as logging into a social media account.
