Poland's Prime Minister Accuses Zondacrypto of Influencing Legislation Amidst Withdrawal Delays
Zondacrypto, a Polish cryptocurrency exchange, is under intense scrutiny following reports of frozen or delayed customer withdrawals and allegations of legislative interference. Prime Minister Donald Tusk has accused the company of sponsoring politicians who opposed crypto market regulation, thereby blocking the legislation. The exchange has ties to Russia and had previously provided financial support to lawmakers. In an attempt to address the allegations, Zondacrypto's CEO, Przemysław Kral, revealed that the company owns a bitcoin wallet holding approximately 4,500 BTC, valued at around $330 million. However, the company is unable to access the funds due to a missing private key that was not handed over by the previous CEO, Sylwester Suszek, who has been missing since 2021. Kral claims that the exchange has sufficient reserves and denied any misuse of client funds, stating that the company remains profitable. The situation has sparked a surge in withdrawal requests, with some customers experiencing delays. An analysis by blockchain intelligence firm Recoveris found that bitcoin balances in hot wallets tied to Zonda have dropped by about 99% since mid-2024. The controversy surrounding Zondacrypto is not new, with the company having faced regulatory issues and investigations in the past. In 2019, Poland's Financial Supervision Authority placed BitBay, the company's former name, on its public warning list for unauthorized financial activities. The Office of Competition and Consumer Protection is currently investigating BB Trade Estonia, Zonda's owner, for violating consumer interests. Kral has attributed the decline in reserves to a 'fundamental analytical error' and stated that the company is a 'stable, solvent, and secure entity.' The situation has led to a vote to overturn President Karol Nawrocki's veto of the law, with 191 MPs voting in favor of the veto and 243 against it, falling short of the required number to overturn the block.
