Ethereum Sees Record-Breaking Quarter with Over 200 Million Transactions
The world's largest smart contract blockchain, Ethereum, has achieved its busiest quarter on record, with its native token's price remaining unchanged. According to Artemis data, the network's base layer processed 200.4 million transactions in Q1 2026, surpassing the 200 million threshold for the first time in a single quarter. This milestone comes after a significant increase in on-chain activity, which began in mid-2025 and has seen each successive quarter experience higher activity than the last, resulting in a 43% jump from Q4 2025's 145 million transactions. Ethereum's smart contract blockchain is a decentralized system that enables the automatic execution of agreements without the need for intermediaries, securely processing and recording transactions on the blockchain. The recent surge in activity can be attributed to the growth of Layer 2s and stablecoins, with the total supply of stablecoins on Ethereum reaching a record $180 billion. While this growth presents opportunities for traders, some analysts have flagged the risk that L2 activity may mask base-layer fee pressure, highlighting the need to distinguish between genuine onboarding and bot activity driving transaction volume.
