World, a digital identity initiative backed by Sam Altman, has introduced its most substantial upgrade to date, positioning its World ID system as a comprehensive 'proof of human' infrastructure designed for individuals, enterprises, and AI agents. This significant overhaul, announced in San Francisco, aims to address the growing concerns within the tech industry regarding the rise of bots, deepfakes, and AI agents impersonating humans online. Altman, also known for his involvement with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is pushing for a broader implementation of authentication, payments, and internet services through World. The system utilizes custom-built 'Orb' devices to establish a unique cryptographic code for each user, generated through facial and iris scans, ensuring a secure and anonymous proof of humanity. This upgrade introduces a redesigned architecture focusing on enhanced privacy, security, and usability, with features such as account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms.
