Ethereum Sees Record-Breaking Quarter with Over 200 Million Transactions

The world's largest smart contract blockchain, Ethereum, has just experienced its busiest quarter on record, with its token price remaining stable. According to Artemis data, the network processed 200.4 million transactions on its base layer in Q1 2026, marking the first time it has exceeded this threshold in a single quarter. This milestone comes after a significant increase in activity, which began in mid-2025 and has seen each successive quarter outperform the last, resulting in a 43% jump from Q4 2025's 145 million transactions. Despite this growth, Ethereum's native token, ether, has fallen over 50% from its August 2025 high of nearly $5,000, presenting a potential opportunity for traders. The surge in activity can be attributed to the growing use of Layer 2s, which are separate networks built on top of Ethereum, and stablecoins, with the total supply of stablecoins on Ethereum reaching a record $180 billion. This growth has led to increased transaction counts on the base layer, driven by settlement and bridging activity. However, some analysts have raised concerns that the increased activity on Layer 2s may be masking base-layer fee pressure, and it remains to be seen whether this quarter marks an inflection point or the top of a local cycle.
