Major Upgrade to Combat Deepfakes and Bots Unveiled by Sam Altman's World Project
The digital identity project, World, backed by Sam Altman, has announced a significant upgrade to its World ID system, aiming to provide 'full-stack proof of human' infrastructure for consumers, enterprises, and AI agents. This overhaul, revealed at a San Francisco event, targets growing concerns over bots and deepfakes impersonating humans online by enhancing authentication, payments, and internet services. Altman is also known for his involvement in OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT and other large language model AI platforms. World's system utilizes custom 'Orb' devices to establish proof of humanity, requiring users to visit an Orb in person for face and iris scanning to generate a unique cryptographic code. The company assures that images are deleted after processing, and only anonymized code fragments are distributed across a network to verify the person's uniqueness without revealing their identity. However, the use of biometric scanning has been criticized by some. The update features a redesigned architecture focusing on improved privacy, security, and usability, including account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app, currently in beta, will allow users to manage credentials and authenticate across platforms, aiming to make proof-of-human identity as seamless as social media login. Alongside the protocol update, World is expanding integrations with consumer platforms like Tinder, where users can display a 'verified human' badge, and introducing tools to combat scalper bots in ticket reservations. The company is also partnering with Zoom to verify meeting participants' humanity and with Docusign to incorporate proof-of-human checks into digital agreements. Furthermore, World is working with various firms to establish a trust layer for automated workflows without requiring personal data, with the goal of creating a 'real human network for the internet.'
