Ethereum Sees Record-Breaking Quarter with Over 200 Million Transactions

The world's largest smart contract blockchain, Ethereum, has just experienced its busiest quarter on record, with its token price remaining relatively stable. According to Artemis data, the network processed 200.4 million transactions in Q1 2026, marking the first time it has exceeded this threshold in a single quarter. This significant milestone comes after a notable increase in on-chain activity, which began to recover in mid-2025 and has continued to grow each quarter. The Ethereum blockchain is a decentralized system that enables the automatic execution of agreements without the need for intermediaries, with transactions being securely recorded and stored on the blockchain. The recent surge in activity can be attributed to the growth of Layer 2s and stablecoins, with the total supply of stablecoins on Ethereum reaching a record $180 billion. This growth has led to increased transaction counts on the base layer, driven by settlement and bridging activity. However, some analysts have raised concerns that the increase in Layer 2 activity may be masking base-layer fee pressure, and that the recent growth may not necessarily translate to increased value for holders. Despite this, the broader trend suggests that Ethereum's usage has completed a multi-year recovery, which could potentially precede price movement.
