Poland's Prime Minister Accuses Zondacrypto of Influencing Legislation Amidst Withdrawal Delays
The troubles facing Zondacrypto, a Polish cryptocurrency exchange, continue to escalate. Following reports of customer withdrawals being frozen or delayed, the company has come under fire from Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who alleged that Zondacrypto sponsored certain politicians to oppose crypto market regulation. Tusk made these comments before a parliamentary vote to overturn President Karol Nawrocki's veto of the law, as reported by AP. The exchange has ties to Russia and had previously provided financial support to lawmakers. Tusk stated that the actions of these politicians, who blocked the legislation, demonstrate their allegiance to Zondacrypto's interests. The exchange's CEO, Przemysław Kral, recently addressed allegations that the company was using investors' funds to supplement its dwindling reserves. Kral claimed that the exchange has sufficient reserves and revealed the existence of a bitcoin wallet containing approximately 4,500 BTC, valued at around $330 million. However, he noted that the company cannot access these funds due to the absence of the private key, which was not transferred by the former CEO, Sylwester Suszek, when he left the company in 2021. Suszek has been missing for four years. Kral attributed the delayed withdrawals to a surge in withdrawal requests, which he believes is part of a broader campaign against the company, including political pressure, regulatory interference, and coordinated media coverage. An analysis by Recoveris, a blockchain intelligence firm, found that the bitcoin balances in hot wallets linked to Zonda have decreased by about 99% since mid-2024. The controversy surrounding Zondacrypto has been ongoing, with the company facing criticism for its connections to individuals with questionable backgrounds. In 2024, an investigation by TVN identified a shareholder, Marek K., who had been sentenced to eight years in prison for complicity in a gangland murder and fined for VAT fraud. The company was also placed on the Financial Supervision Authority's public warning list in 2019 for unauthorized financial activities. In January 2025, the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection launched an investigation into BB Trade Estonia, Zonda's owner, for violating consumer interests. Kral has maintained that the exchange is stable, solvent, and secure, attributing the withdrawal delays to the implementation of new security and transaction monitoring systems. The presented wallet, intended to demonstrate the exchange's reserves, has shown little recent activity, with no outgoing transactions and only 32 receiving transactions. The veto vote ultimately failed to overturn the block, with 191 MPs voting in favor and 243 against, 20 mandates short of the required number.
