Crypto Under Threat: Experts Warn of Looming Quantum Computing Danger
The cryptocurrency industry has been put on notice: while current blockchains are secure, the advent of a powerful 'fault-tolerant quantum computer' poses a significant threat to the security of widely used encryption methods. A 50-page report, commissioned by Coinbase and authored by a team of independent experts, including renowned cryptographers and academics, stresses that although today's blockchains remain secure, the possibility of a future quantum computer capable of breaking encryption is increasingly plausible. As a result, preparation must begin now to mitigate this risk. The report cautions against complacency, emphasizing that while current quantum machines are not yet powerful enough to crack the cryptography underpinning Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other networks, the timeline for the development of a large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer is uncertain but 'clearly on the horizon.' Major crypto ecosystems have already started exploring their responses, with the Ethereum Foundation proposing new types of digital signatures designed to be safe against quantum computers, and Solana experimenting with quantum-resistant wallet designs. The report highlights the need for a proactive approach, recommending flexible transition strategies that avoid sacrificing current security or performance while enabling a rapid upgrade later. With the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recommending the migration to quantum-resistant cryptography by 2035, the report emphasizes that waiting for the threat to become urgent is not a viable option, and that the time to begin preparing for it is now.
