Ethereum Co-Founder Warns of AI Control Risks

The crypto industry is on the cusp of a significant transformation driven by artificial intelligence. According to Joseph Lubin, CEO of Consensys and co-founder of Ethereum, decentralized networks will enable autonomous agents to interact and transact with one another using crypto rails. Lubin envisions a future where AI becomes an intermediary layer between humans and protocols, allowing users to engage with crypto systems through intent rather than manual inputs. However, he warns that if AI infrastructure remains concentrated among a few large tech firms, it could pose significant risks. To mitigate these risks, Lubin emphasizes the importance of decentralized systems and cryptography in ensuring accountability and transparency. The evolution of products like MetaMask, a Consensys product, reflects this shift. MetaMask is being rebuilt as a 'personal money operating system' that enables users to manage their assets and execute transactions through AI-powered agents. Lubin also discusses the rise of 'corporate chains' on Ethereum, where companies seek higher throughput and greater control over their infrastructure. He believes that assets are best issued on Ethereum's base layer to ensure durability. Stablecoins, while a 'stepping stone' toward more decentralized financial systems, are not the endpoint. Instead, Lubin expects growth in decentralized collateral to enable more robust, crypto-native forms of money. The convergence of traditional finance and decentralized finance will result in a more granular and programmable global economy. Regarding quantum computing, Lubin adopts a measured tone, stating that Ethereum developers have been preparing for years and see it as part of the natural evolution of Ethereum.
