Bitcoin Price Drops Below $74,000 as Uptrend Fails to Gain Momentum
The value of bitcoin (BTC) plummeted to approximately $73,500 during Thursday's US morning trading session, experiencing a 2% decline within minutes after failing to break through the increasingly resilient resistance level of $75,000. Over the past 24 hours, bitcoin has seen a decline of over 1% in value. This downturn occurred after the cryptocurrency briefly surpassed the $75,000 mark, only to be met with resistance once again. In tandem with the stock market's remarkable rally, which propelled the Nasdaq and S&P 500 to record highs on the previous day, the market experienced a brief pause. About an hour into the session, both indices had dipped by roughly 0.1%. Stocks related to the cryptocurrency sector also experienced a decline across the board, with companies like Coinbase (COIN), Strategy (MSTR), Robinhood (HOOD), and Circle (CRCL) seeing their stock prices drop by approximately 2-3% during morning trading. Meanwhile, crude oil prices rose by about 2%, regaining the $90 level, as ongoing geopolitical tensions continued to fuel supply concerns. The $75,000 to $76,000 range is crucial for bitcoin, as this was the price point at which it traded prior to the market crash on February 5, which sent BTC plummeting to $60,000. A successful breach of this level could signal a larger upward movement, potentially driving prices back up to around $90,000, the level at which bitcoin started the year. The correlation between bitcoin and software stocks has been noteworthy, with the two moving in near lockstep prior to the conflict in the Middle East at the end of February. Although bitcoin has outperformed the IGV software ETF, gaining over 11% since the conflict began, the ETF has risen by roughly 2%. However, over the past five days, IGV has surged by as much as 11%, while bitcoin has remained relatively flat, suggesting that software stocks may have simply been lagging behind bitcoin and are now catching up. On Thursday, IGV saw a 1% increase, while bitcoin experienced a 1.5% decline.
