Poland's Prime Minister Accuses Zondacrypto of Influencing Legislation Amidst Frozen Withdrawals
The troubles facing Polish cryptocurrency exchange Zondacrypto have escalated, with Prime Minister Donald Tusk linking the company to interference in legislative matters. This comes on the heels of reports of frozen or delayed customer withdrawals. Tusk claimed that Zondacrypto had sponsored politicians who opposed crypto market regulation, implying that these lawmakers were acting in the company's interests. The exchange, which has ties to Russia, had previously provided financial support to these politicians. Tusk's comments preceded a vote to overturn President Karol Nawrocki's veto of a law, which ultimately failed to pass. Zondacrypto's CEO, Przemysław Kral, attempted to address allegations that the company was using investor funds to supplement its dwindling reserves. Kral revealed that the exchange owns a bitcoin wallet containing approximately 4,500 BTC, valued at around $330 million. However, the company is unable to access these funds due to a missing private key that was not handed over by the former CEO, Sylwester Suszek, who has been missing since 2021. Kral attributed the delayed withdrawals to a surge in withdrawal requests, which he believes is part of a broader campaign against the company, including political pressure and regulatory interference. An analysis by blockchain intelligence firm Recoveris found that bitcoin balances in hot wallets tied to Zonda have decreased by about 99% since mid-2024. The controversy surrounding Zondacrypto is long-standing, with the company facing investigations and warnings from regulatory authorities in the past. In 2024, an investigative report identified a shareholder with a criminal record, and in 2019, the company was placed on a public warning list for unauthorized financial activities. The Office of Competition and Consumer Protection is currently investigating Zonda's owner, BB Trade Estonia, for violating consumer interests.
