The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission is embracing artificial intelligence to enhance its regulatory capabilities, particularly in the areas of cryptocurrency and prediction markets, according to Chairman Mike Selig's congressional testimony. Despite a significant decline in the agency's workforce under the Trump administration, with about a quarter of staff leaving since 2025, the CFTC is leveraging AI tools like Microsoft's Copilot to streamline workflows and support investigations. Selig emphasized that the agency is operating more efficiently and effectively, with AI playing a crucial role in surveilling markets and facilitating investigations.

The CFTC is currently overseeing the rapidly expanding cryptocurrency and prediction markets, with numerous investigations underway. The agency is also asserting its jurisdiction over prediction markets, including those operated by prominent firms like Polymarket and Kalshi, which have seen significant growth in recent times. The Senate's proposed Digital Asset Market Clarity Act would further solidify the CFTC's role in regulating non-securities crypto trading.

Selig acknowledged the challenges posed by staffing cuts, but expressed confidence in the agency's ability to enforce market regulations, citing a 'zero tolerance' policy for illicit activities. However, some lawmakers expressed concerns that the agency's reduced workforce may hinder its ability to effectively regulate these emerging markets, emphasizing the need for additional resources and personnel to ensure adequate oversight.
