Ethereum Co-Founder Joseph Lubin Highlights the Risks of Centralized AI Control

The next significant turning point for the crypto industry is expected to come from advancements in artificial intelligence, according to Joseph Lubin, CEO of Consensys and Co-Founder of Ethereum. In a recent interview, Lubin expressed his belief that autonomous agents can facilitate transactions, coordinate, and verify each other on decentralized networks, utilizing crypto infrastructure as the foundation for machine-driven activities. He also emphasized the potential risks associated with AI infrastructure being controlled by a few large technology companies, stating that this could lead to trouble. Lubin argued that decentralized systems and cryptography are essential for ensuring accountability and enabling machines to verify each other in transparent environments. The evolution of products like MetaMask, a Consensys product, reflects this shift, with the wallet being rebuilt as a user-controlled neobank, part of a transition toward a personal money operating system. AI-powered agents could potentially act on behalf of users, managing assets and executing transactions in a growing decentralized economy. Lubin also discussed the rise of corporate chains on Ethereum, the growth of stablecoins, and the convergence of traditional and decentralized finance. He noted that while quantum computing poses a long-term risk, Ethereum developers have been preparing for it, seeing it as part of the natural evolution of the Ethereum ecosystem.
