Crypto Exploit Results in $292 Million Loss for Kelp DAO
A recent attack on Kelp DAO's cross-chain bridge has resulted in the theft of 116,500 restaked ether tokens, valued at around $292 million. The exploit occurred on Saturday at 17:35 UTC, with the attacker managing to trick the bridge into releasing the tokens to a controlled address. The bridge in question held the reserve backing wrapped versions of the token on over 20 other blockchains, leaving holders of these tokens uncertain about their value. In response to the attack, Kelp DAO's emergency pauser multisig froze the protocol's core contracts, while other DeFi platforms such as Aave, SparkLend, and Fluid have also taken measures to mitigate potential losses. The incident has sparked concerns about the potential for a broader contagion effect, with the price of AAVE falling by around 10% in the aftermath. As the situation continues to unfold, the ability of Kelp DAO to recover the stolen funds and maintain the peg of the restaked ether token will be closely watched. The exploit is the latest in a series of high-profile attacks on DeFi protocols, including the recent drain of $285 million from Solana-based perpetuals protocol Drift, and highlights the ongoing security risks facing the DeFi space.
