Poland's Prime Minister Accuses Zondacrypto of Influencing Legislation Amidst Ongoing Controversy
Zondacrypto, a Polish cryptocurrency exchange, is under intense scrutiny following allegations of legislative interference and reports of frozen or delayed customer withdrawals. In a recent statement, Prime Minister Donald Tusk linked the company to politicians who opposed crypto market regulation, suggesting that Zondacrypto had sponsored these lawmakers. The exchange has ties to Russia and had previously provided financial support to politicians, according to Tusk. This development comes after Zondacrypto's CEO, Przemysław Kral, attempted to address allegations that the company was misusing investor funds by revealing the existence of a 4,500 BTC wallet, valued at approximately $330 million. However, Kral admitted that the company cannot access the wallet due to a missing private key, which was not handed over by the previous owner, former CEO Sylwester Suszek, who has been missing since 2021. The situation has sparked concerns about the company's solvency and the security of customer funds. Zondacrypto has faced reports of delayed withdrawals since late March, which Kral attributes to a surge in withdrawal requests and the implementation of new security measures. An analysis by blockchain intelligence firm Recoveris found that bitcoin balances in hot wallets tied to Zonda have dropped by about 99% since mid-2024. The controversy surrounding Zondacrypto is not new, with the company having faced previous allegations of unauthorized financial activities and ties to individuals with criminal backgrounds. The Office of Competition and Consumer Protection is currently investigating Zonda's owner, BB Trade Estonia, for violating consumer interests. As the situation unfolds, Zondacrypto's future remains uncertain, with the company facing mounting pressure from regulators, politicians, and customers.
