US Government Transfers $606,000 in Bitcoin Linked to 2016 Bitfinex Hack to Coinbase
The US government has been active on the blockchain, transferring approximately $606,000 worth of bitcoin to Coinbase Prime. The 8 BTC transferred are linked to Ilya Lichtenstein, the individual behind the 2016 Bitfinex hack, according to on-chain data tracked by Arkham. The transfer of these coins to an exchange may not necessarily indicate selling pressure, but rather routine movement or changes in custody. The bitcoin tied to the Bitfinex hack has a court-mandated destination, with the government required to return the coins to Bitfinex rather than liquidating them. Bitfinex plans to use the returned funds to redeem all outstanding Recovery Right Tokens and allocate at least 80% of the remaining net proceeds to repurchase and burn its UNUS SED LEO token. The 2016 hack saw Lichtenstein transfer 119,756 BTC, worth roughly $72 million at the time, through a series of sophisticated money laundering techniques. The stolen coins were eventually seized by investigators in 2022, with Lichtenstein sentenced to 60 months in federal prison in 2024. The US government currently holds bitcoin valued at approximately $24.54 billion, as well as other cryptocurrencies, with the seized BTC initially intended to form part of a national strategic bitcoin reserve.
