Ethereum Sees Record-Breaking Quarter with 200 Million Transactions

The world's largest smart contract blockchain, Ethereum, has achieved its busiest quarter to date, with its native token's price remaining stable. According to Artemis data, the network processed 200.4 million transactions in Q1 2026, marking a significant milestone. This surpasses the previous quarterly low of approximately 90 million transactions in 2023, which was followed by a period of slow growth in 2024. Ethereum's smart contract system enables the automatic execution of agreements without intermediaries, securely recording actions such as token transfers and smart contract interactions on the blockchain. The resurgence in Ethereum's on-chain activity began in mid-2025 and has continued to grow, with Q1 2026 seeing a 43% increase from the previous quarter. Notably, the native token ether has declined by over 50% from its peak in August 2025, presenting a potential opportunity for traders. Much of the network's activity is driven by Layer 2s, which are secondary networks built on top of Ethereum, offering cheaper transactions that are then settled on the main chain. Stablecoins, which are tokenized versions of fiat currencies, are also widely used on Ethereum, with a record total supply of $180 billion. Both trends contribute to higher transaction counts on the base layer, even when users do not directly interact with it. However, some analysts warn that Layer 2 activity may mask base-layer fee pressure, as the Dencun upgrade has reduced data costs for L2s, resulting in lower earnings per transaction for Ethereum.
