World, a digital identity project backed by Sam Altman, has introduced a major upgrade to its World ID system, aiming to provide 'full-stack proof of human' infrastructure for consumers, enterprises, and AI agents. The upgrade, announced in San Francisco, focuses on addressing growing concerns over bots and deepfakes impersonating humans online. The system utilizes custom-built 'Orb' devices to establish proof of humanity by scanning users' faces and irises, generating a unique cryptographic code. This code is then used to create a credential that verifies a user's humanity without revealing their identity or personal data. The update features a redesigned architecture that prioritizes privacy, security, and usability, including account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app is also being introduced, allowing users to manage their credentials and authenticate across platforms seamlessly. The company is expanding its partnerships with various platforms, including Tinder, where users can display a 'verified human' badge, and Zoom, where a 'Deep Face' feature will verify meeting participants' identities. Additionally, World is working with Docusign to incorporate proof-of-human checks into digital agreements, and with other firms to establish a trust layer for automated workflows without requiring personal data.
