The Ethereum Foundation is placing a strong emphasis on addressing a critical need within the ecosystem: enhancing security measures. The organization has introduced a new initiative on Tuesday, focusing on overcoming a significant challenge in crypto development – the prohibitively high costs associated with conducting comprehensive security audits for smart contracts.

Through the "Audit Subsidy Program", the foundation has collaborated with prominent audit providers and key ecosystem players to increase accessibility to professional security assessments for developers. With a $1 million subsidy fund, the program aims to alleviate the financial hurdles that have historically limited many teams from undergoing thorough audits, despite their importance as a widely accepted best practice within the industry. This initiative is part of the foundation's broader "Trillion Dollar Security Initiative", which concentrates on bolstering Ethereum's security as it expands to support increasingly complex applications and larger on-chain value transfers.

The program boasts partnerships with notable companies such as Nethermind, Chainlink Labs, and Areta, providing builders with streamlined access to over 20 reputable audit firms and trusted security expertise across the ecosystem. Concurrently with the program's launch, the foundation has also unveiled a new framework known as the "CROPS principles", an acronym representing censorship resistance, open source, privacy, and security. This framework is designed to serve as a guiding principle for the development and evaluation of applications within the Ethereum ecosystem. Developers can submit their projects for evaluation, following which an expert panel reviews the applications.

Upon selection, teams receive subsidies that can be directly applied to audit services via Areta's platform. The program is open to all Ethereum mainnet developers, regardless of their project's size or stage.

According to the foundation, "the subsidy program makes audits more accessible, thereby strengthening the Ethereum ecosystem". For more information, read the Ethereum Foundation's newly published mandate, which outlines its role and core principles.
