Sam Altman's World Project Unveils Significant Upgrade to Combat Deepfakes and Bots

The World digital identity project, backed by Sam Altman, has announced its most substantial upgrade to date, introducing a 'full-stack proof of human' infrastructure designed for consumers, enterprises, and AI agents. This overhaul aims to address the growing concerns over bots and deepfakes impersonating humans online by enhancing authentication, payments, and internet services. Altman is also known for his involvement in OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT and other large language model AI platforms. The World system utilizes custom-built 'Orb' devices to establish proof of humanity, requiring users to visit an Orb in person for face and iris scanning to generate a unique cryptographic code. This code is then anonymized and distributed across a network to confirm the user's unique human identity without revealing personal data. However, some critics have raised concerns over the use of biometric scanning via the Orb. The update features a redesigned architecture focusing on improved privacy, security, and usability, with new features such as account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app is also being introduced, currently in beta, to allow users to manage their credentials and authenticate across platforms seamlessly. World is expanding its partnerships with consumer platforms like Tinder, where users can display a 'verified human' badge, and is rolling out tools to combat scalper bots in ticket reservations. The company is also working with Zoom to verify meeting participants' identities and with Docusign to incorporate proof-of-human checks into digital agreements. Additionally, World is developing tooling for developers to attach human-verified credentials to agents, enabling sensitive actions and agent-based commerce tied to verified individuals. This move is part of a broader effort to establish a trust layer for automated workflows without requiring personal data, with collaborations including Okta, Vercel, and Browserbase.
