Ethereum Co-Founder Joseph Lubin Highlights the Risks of AI Control by Major Tech Companies

According to Joseph Lubin, CEO of Consensys and co-founder of Ethereum, the next significant milestone in the crypto space will be driven by artificial intelligence. In a recent interview, Lubin discussed how autonomous agents can interact, coordinate, and verify transactions on decentralized networks, utilizing crypto rails as the foundation for machine-driven activities. He expressed his support for the idea that blockchain is suited for machine intelligence but does not envision humans being replaced. Instead, he believes that increasingly intelligent interfaces will simplify complexity, enabling users to interact with crypto systems through intent rather than manual inputs, with AI acting as an intermediary layer between people and protocols. However, Lubin warned that if AI infrastructure remains concentrated among large tech firms, it could pose significant risks. He emphasized the importance of decentralized systems and cryptography in ensuring accountability and enabling machines to operate transparently. The evolution of products like MetaMask, a Consensys product, reflects this shift. Lubin described MetaMask as a new kind of neobank that users own and control, part of a transition toward a personal money operating system. AI-powered agents could manage assets, execute transactions, and navigate the growing decentralized economy on behalf of users. Lubin also pointed to structural changes in the Ethereum ecosystem, including the rise of corporate chains, which he expects to become more common as companies seek higher throughput and greater control over their infrastructure. While he acknowledges the growth of stablecoins, he views them as a stepping stone toward more fully decentralized financial systems. Lubin also discussed the convergence of traditional finance and decentralized finance, which he believes will result in a more granular and programmable global economy. Regarding quantum computing, Lubin adopted a measured tone, stating that Ethereum developers have been preparing for the potential risks for years and see it as part of the natural evolution of Ethereum.
