Poland's Prime Minister Accuses Zondacrypto of Influencing Legislation Amid Ongoing Controversy
Zondacrypto, a Polish cryptocurrency exchange, is under intense scrutiny following reports of frozen or delayed customer withdrawals and allegations of legislative interference. Prime Minister Donald Tusk has accused the company of sponsoring politicians who opposed crypto market regulation, thereby blocking the legislation. The exchange has ties to Russia and had previously provided financial support to lawmakers. In an attempt to address the allegations, Zondacrypto's CEO, Przemysław Kral, revealed that the company owns a bitcoin wallet holding approximately 4,500 BTC, valued at around $330 million. However, the company is unable to access the funds due to a missing private key that was not handed over by the former CEO, Sylwester Suszek, who has been missing since 2021. Kral claims that the exchange has sufficient reserves and denied any misuse of client funds, attributing the situation to a broader campaign against the company, including political pressure, regulatory interference, and coordinated media coverage. The controversy surrounding Zondacrypto has been ongoing, with the company facing reports of frozen or delayed customer withdrawals since late March. An analysis by blockchain intelligence firm Recoveris found that bitcoin balances in hot wallets tied to Zonda have dropped by about 99% since mid-2024. The company has a history of controversy, including a 2019 warning from Poland's Financial Supervision Authority for unauthorized financial activities and an ongoing investigation by the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection for violating consumer interests.
