US Government Transfers $606,000 in Bitcoin Linked to 2016 Bitfinex Hack to Coinbase

The US government has transferred approximately $606,000 worth of bitcoin to Coinbase, with on-chain data suggesting the 8 BTC are linked to the 2016 Bitfinex hack. The transferred coins are subject to a court-mandated destination, requiring the government to return them to Bitfinex. The exchange plans to use the returned funds to redeem all outstanding Recovery Right Tokens and allocate at least 80% of the remaining net proceeds to repurchase and burn its UNUS SED LEO token. The 2016 hack resulted in the theft of 119,756 BTC, worth roughly $72 million at the time, and saw the perpetrator, Ilya Lichtenstein, engage in sophisticated money laundering before being caught and sentenced to 60 months in federal prison. The recovered coins were previously held in government custody, with the US stating its seized BTC holdings would form part of a national strategic bitcoin reserve, currently valued at approximately $24.54 billion.
