Ethereum Co-Founder Joseph Lubin Highlights the Risks of AI Control by Major Tech Firms
The next significant milestone for the crypto industry will be shaped by advancements in artificial intelligence, according to Joseph Lubin, CEO of Consensys and co-founder of Ethereum. In a conversation with CoinDesk, Lubin emphasized that autonomous agents will leverage decentralized networks and crypto infrastructure to facilitate transactions and interactions. He expressed support for the concept of blockchain serving as a foundation for machine intelligences but does not foresee humans being replaced. Instead, Lubin envisions increasingly sophisticated interfaces that simplify user interactions with crypto systems through intent-based inputs, positioning AI as an intermediary between users and protocols. However, he cautions that if AI infrastructure becomes dominated by a few large tech companies, it could pose significant risks. Decentralized systems and cryptography will be crucial in ensuring accountability and enabling transparent, verifiable environments where machines can verify each other's actions. Products like MetaMask are evolving to incorporate these changes, with Lubin describing it as a 'new kind of neobank' that users own and control, part of a broader transition toward a 'personal money operating system.' This system could empower AI-powered agents to manage assets, execute transactions, and navigate the decentralized economy on behalf of users. Lubin also discussed the emergence of 'corporate chains' on Ethereum, where companies seek higher throughput and greater control over their infrastructure. He advocates for issuing assets on Ethereum's base layer to ensure durability, even if they are later used across other networks. Stablecoins are seen as a stepping stone toward more decentralized financial systems, and tokenization is expected to converge traditional and decentralized finance, leading to a more granular and programmable global economy. While acknowledging the long-term technical risks of quantum computing, Lubin adopted a measured stance, stating that Ethereum developers have been preparing for this eventuality and view it as part of the natural evolution of Ethereum.
