The Empty Promise of 'Trustless' Security on Wall Street

As these exchanges expand into multi-asset venues, their security mechanisms must evolve beyond wallets to include identity, permissions, pricing, and settlement. However, despite increasing regulatory pressure, their security continues to fail. These significant hacks occurred at major global exchanges with substantial capital and technology, indicating that a lack of resources was not the issue - rather, security was being treated as a marketing tool. Much of the industry still views security as a performance rather than a discipline, investing in surface-level measures like dashboards, reserve snapshots, and public statements that appear convincing but do not demonstrate how risk is managed on a daily basis. This 'security theater' focuses on appearances rather than actual safety, prioritizing optics over real governance. When a business is growing rapidly, security controls can be seen as a hindrance, slowing down decisions and triggering uncomfortable questions. However, this mindset is problematic because it prioritizes surface-level confidence over internal discipline. The issue with this approach is that it does not withstand stress. This incident highlights how quickly a situation can escalate from 'everything looks fine' to users losing access to their funds. To earn genuine trust, exchanges must demonstrate a system that can endure stress, which can be tested. Proof-of-reserves is a starting point, providing evidence that certain assets exist. However, it says little about what the exchange owes users, what rules apply to their money in times of trouble, or whether the numbers are accurate during mass withdrawals. Transparency should be two-sided, clearly showing assets and liabilities with an independent check, and the 'proof' should be verifiable through cryptographic methods. Strict internal rules are also essential, ensuring that no single person can move customer funds, unusual activity triggers reviews, and large transfers require approval from at least two people. With these controls in place, a compromised account cannot cause a chain reaction across the platform. Additionally, since exchanges are becoming multi-asset platforms, these rules must also prevent permission mistakes or pricing anomalies from spilling into cross-asset liquidations. Quick incident response is the final test of real security, with a serious exchange knowing exactly what to do in the first hour, isolating the breach, pausing critical flows, and communicating clearly. While these measures do not cover every possible risk, they form the backbone of true exchange durability, preventing routine incidents from turning into systemic failures. By 2026, simply saying 'trust us' will no longer be sufficient. Exchanges must stop acting like performers in a safety show and instead demonstrate evidence of controls, separation of duties, independent assurance, and a response plan that works under pressure. Everyday users and large investors alike are starting to ask questions like whether a mistake can drain the platform or if the system can stop it, and whether this can be proven with enforced limits and approvals rather than explanations after the fact.
