The World digital identity project, backed by Sam Altman, has launched a major upgrade to its World ID system, aiming to provide 'full-stack proof of human' infrastructure for consumers, enterprises, and AI agents. This overhaul is in response to growing concerns over bots, deepfakes, and AI agents impersonating humans online. The system utilizes custom-built 'Orb' devices to establish proof of humanity, requiring users to visit an Orb in person for face and iris scanning to generate a unique cryptographic code. The update features a redesigned architecture focusing on improved privacy, security, and usability, including account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app is also being introduced to allow users to manage credentials and authenticate across platforms seamlessly. The company is expanding its partnerships with various platforms, including Tinder, Zoom, and Docusign, to embed its identity layer and combat issues such as scalper bots and deepfakes. The goal is to make proof-of-human identity as effortless as social media login, with applications in dating apps, gaming, online communities, and enterprise use cases.
