Poland's Prime Minister Accuses Zondacrypto of Influencing Legislation Amidst Withdrawal Delays

The troubles facing Polish cryptocurrency exchange Zondacrypto continue to escalate. Following reports of customers experiencing frozen or delayed withdrawals, the company has come under fire from Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who alleges that Zondacrypto has sponsored politicians who oppose regulatory measures for the crypto market. Tusk made these comments prior to a parliamentary vote on overturning President Karol Nawrocki's veto of a law aimed at regulating the crypto market, as reported by AP. The prime minister also highlighted Zondacrypto's ties to Russia and its history of providing financial support to lawmakers. In an attempt to address allegations that the company is misusing investor funds to supplement its dwindling reserves, Zondacrypto's CEO Przemysław Kral took to social media platform X. Kral claimed that the exchange has sufficient reserves and disclosed the existence of a bitcoin wallet containing approximately 4,500 BTC, valued at around $330 million. However, he revealed that the company is unable to access these funds due to the previous owner's failure to hand over the private key, and the former CEO's subsequent disappearance. Kral attributed the delayed withdrawals to an unusual surge in withdrawal requests, which he believes is part of a broader campaign against the company. This campaign, according to Kral, involves political pressure, regulatory interference, and coordinated media coverage. An analysis conducted by blockchain intelligence firm Recoveris found that the bitcoin balances in hot wallets associated with Zonda have decreased by approximately 99% since mid-2024. The controversy surrounding Zondacrypto is not new, with the company having faced scrutiny in the past. In 2024, an investigative report by TVN identified one of the company's shareholders, Marek K., as a convicted criminal who had been sentenced to eight years in prison for his involvement in a gangland murder and had been fined for VAT fraud. The Financial Supervision Authority of Poland had also placed BitBay, Zondacrypto's predecessor, on its public warning list in 2019 for engaging in unauthorized financial activities. More recently, the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection initiated an investigation into BB Trade Estonia, Zonda's owner, for allegedly violating consumer interests. Kral has dismissed reports of declining reserves as a result of a 'fundamental analytical error' that focuses solely on hot wallets, and has emphasized that Zondacrypto remains a stable and secure entity. The onchain data for the wallet presented as proof of reserves shows no outgoing transactions and only 32 incoming transactions, raising further questions about the company's financial situation.
