The Web3 VC Differentiation Dilemma

The typical Web3 venture capital pitch has become indistinguishable, with every fund claiming to possess strong relationships and a robust network. However, this uniformity renders such statements meaningless. Liquidity providers have grown weary of hearing the same pitch, and the industry continues to replicate the same formula, resulting in a lack of differentiation. At TBV, we recognized the need to identify what set us apart from others. The answer was not what we had, but what we could build. Research consistently shows that emerging managers outperform established funds, delivering higher returns on average. The challenge lies in communicating a clear reason for clients to invest in them over others. To address this, we decided to create a product, not just a promise. We focused on what a fund can own, rather than who it knows. Connections are not defensible, but what a fund has built, the data it has generated, and the platform value it creates for founders are. We chose to develop a people-centric deal engine through events, recognizing that Web3 conferences are a crucial component of the ecosystem. By building the environment and owning the data, we created a defensible model. Our event series drew over 43,000 attendees and more than 100 partners, feeding into our AI-driven deal engine, TBX. This deliberate infrastructure has enabled us to establish a unique value proposition. Other VC firms, such as Outlier Ventures and Paradigm, have also rethought their approaches, focusing on building genuine platforms of support and contributing to protocols. What these models share is that the fund itself is a product with utility beyond capital. The question is no longer how to tell a better story, but how to build something that makes the story self-evident. The good news is that there isn't just one answer, and the next generation of interesting managers will share this focus on building real infrastructure. Those who do will be hard to displace, while those still relying on generic pitches will find themselves left behind.
