Poland's Prime Minister Accuses Zondacrypto of Influencing Legislation
Zondacrypto, a Polish cryptocurrency exchange, is facing mounting criticism after Prime Minister Donald Tusk alleged that the company had sponsored politicians who opposed crypto market regulation. Tusk claimed that these politicians were acting in the interests of Zondacrypto, which has ties to Russia and had previously provided them with financial support. This accusation came as the parliament voted on overturning President Karol Nawrocki's veto of the law. The exchange has been under fire due to reports of frozen or delayed customer withdrawals, which CEO Przemysław Kral has denied, stating that the company has sufficient reserves. However, Kral revealed that Zondacrypto owns a bitcoin wallet holding approximately 4,500 BTC, valued at around $330 million, but is unable to access it due to a missing private key. The key was not handed over by the former CEO, Sylwester Suszek, in 2021, and he has been missing for four years. The situation has sparked concerns about the company's financial health and its ability to manage customer funds. Kral has framed the situation as part of a broader campaign against the company, citing supposed political pressure, regulatory interference, and coordinated media coverage. The controversy surrounding Zondacrypto is not new, with the company having faced previous allegations of unauthorized financial activities and links to criminal individuals. The Office of Competition and Consumer Protection has been investigating the company since January 2025 for violating consumer interests. The recent accusation by the Prime Minister has added to the company's woes, with many calling for greater transparency and accountability in the cryptocurrency industry.
