The Illusion of Security: Why Crypto Exchanges Must Move Beyond Theatrics

The crypto market has witnessed tremendous growth, with millions of users and businesses relying on digital exchanges for transactions. Despite this, the security mechanisms in place are still inadequate, with over $3 billion in crypto assets stolen in 2025. Major exchanges, despite having ample resources, have been vulnerable to hacks, highlighting that the issue lies not with funding, but with the approach to security. The industry's focus on appearances, such as dashboards and public statements, rather than actual risk management, is a significant concern. This 'security theater' prioritizes optics over substance, leaving users exposed to potential threats. To build genuine trust, exchanges must adopt a more robust approach to security, incorporating proof-of-reserves, strict internal rules, and quick incident response. The current 'trust us' approach will no longer suffice, and exchanges must be willing to demonstrate their security measures to attract and retain customers, particularly institutional investors who view security as a critical aspect of counterparty risk. By prioritizing the development of systems that can withstand stress and mitigate damage, exchanges can establish a foundation for long-term trust and durability.
