Poland's Prime Minister Accuses Zondacrypto of Influencing Legislation Amidst Ongoing Controversy
Zondacrypto, a Polish cryptocurrency exchange, is facing mounting criticism after Prime Minister Donald Tusk accused the company of sponsoring politicians who opposed crypto market regulation. The controversy surrounding the exchange has been escalating since reports of frozen or delayed customer withdrawals surfaced in late March. In an attempt to alleviate concerns, CEO Przemysław Kral revealed that the exchange owns a bitcoin wallet containing approximately 4,500 BTC, valued at around $330 million. However, the company is unable to access the funds due to a missing private key that was not handed over by the previous CEO, Sylwester Suszek, who has been missing since 2021. Kral claims that the exchange has sufficient reserves and denied any misuse of client funds, attributing the delayed withdrawals to a surge in withdrawal requests and the implementation of new security measures. The situation has sparked a broader debate about the company's legitimacy, with some analysts pointing to a significant decline in the exchange's hot wallet balances and suspected ties to Russian interests. The controversy has also drawn attention to the company's history of regulatory issues, including a public warning from Poland's Financial Supervision Authority in 2019 and an ongoing investigation by the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection.
