Ethereum Sees Record-Breaking Quarter with 200 Million Transactions
The world's largest smart contract blockchain, Ethereum, has just experienced its most active quarter to date, with its native token remaining relatively stable. According to Artemis data, the network processed a record 200.4 million transactions on its base layer in Q1 2026, surpassing the 200 million mark for the first time. This significant increase comes after quarterly transaction counts hit a low of around 90 million in 2023 and then plateaued between 100 million and 120 million throughout most of 2024. Ethereum's smart contract system enables the automated execution of agreements without intermediaries, securely recording actions such as sending ether, interacting with smart contracts, or transferring tokens on the blockchain. The resurgence in Ethereum's on-chain activity, which began in mid-2025, has seen each quarter outperform the last, culminating in a 43% jump in Q1 2026 compared to Q4 2025's 145 million transactions. Notably, this growth has not been reflected in the price of ether, which has dropped over 50% from its August 2025 high. Much of the network's activity is driven by Layer 2s, separate networks built on top of Ethereum that offer cheaper transaction processing, and stablecoins, which have reached a record $180 billion in total supply on the platform. While this growth may present opportunities for traders, some analysts caution that Layer 2 activity may mask base-layer fee pressure, and the sustainability of this growth will depend on whether it is driven by genuine user adoption or bot activity.
