Ethereum Co-Founder Warns of AI Control Risks by Large Tech Companies

The next significant milestone in the crypto industry is expected to emerge from advancements in artificial intelligence, according to Joseph Lubin, CEO of Consensys and co-founder of Ethereum. In a recent interview, Lubin highlighted the potential of autonomous agents to facilitate transactions, coordination, and verification on decentralized networks, utilizing crypto infrastructure as the foundation for machine-driven activities. Lubin expressed sympathy for the idea that blockchain technology is particularly suited for machine intelligences but emphasized that this development will not lead to human displacement. Instead, increasingly sophisticated interfaces will simplify complexity, enabling users to interact with crypto systems through intent rather than manual inputs, with AI serving as an intermediary layer between people and protocols. However, Lubin cautioned that if AI infrastructure remains concentrated among a few large tech firms, it could pose significant risks. Decentralized systems and cryptography will be crucial in ensuring accountability and enabling machines to verify each other's actions in transparent environments. The evolution of products like MetaMask, a Consensys product, reflects this shift, with the wallet being rebuilt as a user-controlled, decentralized banking system. AI-powered agents could act on behalf of users, managing assets and executing transactions within a growing decentralized economy. Lubin also discussed the rise of corporate chains on Ethereum, expecting companies to seek higher throughput and greater control over their infrastructure. He emphasized that assets are best issued on Ethereum's base layer to ensure durability. Stablecoins, a rapidly growing sector in crypto, are seen as a stepping stone toward more fully decentralized financial systems. Lubin envisions a future where traditional finance and decentralized finance converge, resulting in a more granular and programmable global economy. While addressing concerns about quantum computing, Lubin adopted a measured tone, stating that Ethereum developers have been preparing for this potential risk for years and view it as part of the natural evolution of Ethereum.
