Web3 Venture Capitalists Face a Differentiation Challenge
The typical Web3 VC pitch has become all too familiar. Phrases like 'deep ecosystem relationships' and 'value beyond capital' have lost their impact due to overuse. For liquidity providers, these words have become meaningless. Despite this, the industry continues to replicate the same pitch, with impressive logos and vague theses. To break this cycle, my colleagues and I at TBV sought to identify what sets us apart from others. The answer was humbling: we had to create something unique. Emerging managers often outperform established funds, delivering higher returns and reaching top-quartile performance more frequently. However, they struggle to communicate their value proposition to clients. To address this, we decided to make our pitch a product, not a promise. We focused on what we could build, the data we could generate, and the platform value we could create for founders. Our solution was to develop a people-centric deal engine through events. By hosting conferences and creating a network, we could own the data and build relationships at scale. This approach has been successful, with our event series drawing over 43,000 attendees and more than 100 partners in 2025. Other VC firms, such as Outlier Ventures and Paradigm, have also found innovative ways to differentiate themselves. Outlier Ventures has built a platform to support early-stage founders, while Paradigm contributes to protocols, demonstrating a level of technical expertise that is hard to replicate. These models share a common trait: they offer a product with utility beyond capital. The next generation of managers will need to build something that makes their story self-evident, rather than just telling a better story. There is no one-size-fits-all answer, but the key is to create real infrastructure that provides value to founders and investors. Those who build meaningful infrastructure now will be well-positioned for the future, while those who rely on unproven relationships and unmeasurable value will struggle to remain relevant.
