The Ethereum Foundation has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing a critical need within the ecosystem: bolstering security measures. The organization has introduced a novel initiative aimed at mitigating a persistent challenge in cryptocurrency development – the prohibitively high costs associated with conducting thorough smart contract security audits. Through the 'Audit Subsidy Program', the foundation has established partnerships with prominent audit providers and key ecosystem players to increase accessibility to professional security assessments for developers.
With a $1 million subsidy fund in place, the program seeks to alleviate financial barriers that have historically hindered numerous teams from undergoing comprehensive audits, despite their importance as a best practice within the industry. This initiative forms part of the foundation's broader 'Trillion Dollar Security Initiative', which focuses on fortifying Ethereum as it expands to support increasingly complex applications and larger on-chain value transfers. The program boasts an impressive array of partners, including Nethermind, Chainlink Labs, and Areta, and facilitates connections between builders and over 20 esteemed audit firms, thereby streamlining access to trusted security expertise throughout the ecosystem. Concurrently with the program's launch, the foundation unveiled a new framework known as the 'CROPS principles', an acronym representing censorship resistance, open source, privacy, and security.
This framework is intended to provide guidance on the development and evaluation of applications across the Ethereum ecosystem. Developers can submit their projects for consideration, following which an expert committee reviews the applications. Upon selection, teams receive subsidies that can be directly applied to audit services via Areta's platform. The program is open to all Ethereum mainnet builders, regardless of their size or development stage.
According to the foundation, 'the subsidy program renders audits accessible, thereby strengthening the Ethereum ecosystem'. For further information, refer to the Ethereum Foundation's newly published mandate, which outlines its role and core principles.
