Major Upgrade Unveiled by Sam Altman's World Project to Combat Deepfakes and Bots
On Friday, World, a digital identity project backed by Sam Altman, announced its most significant upgrade to the World ID system, aiming to provide 'full-stack proof of human' infrastructure for consumers, enterprises, and AI agents. This development comes amidst growing concerns in the tech industry about the impersonation of humans online by bots, deepfakes, and AI agents, which World is directly addressing through enhanced authentication, payments, and internet services. Altman is also known for his involvement with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT and other large language model AI platforms. The World ID system utilizes custom-built 'Orb' devices to establish proof of humanity. To obtain a World ID, individuals must visit an Orb in person, where their face and iris are scanned to generate a unique cryptographic code. According to the company, the scanned images are deleted after processing, and only anonymized fragments of the code are distributed across a network to verify the individual's uniqueness without revealing their identity or personal data. However, some critics have raised concerns about the use of biometric scanning via the Orb. The update introduces a redesigned architecture focused on improving privacy, security, and usability, with new features such as account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app, currently in beta, will enable users to manage their credentials and authenticate across platforms, reflecting the ambition to make proof-of-human identity as straightforward as social media login. Alongside the protocol update, World has announced integrations to embed its identity layer across consumer platforms, including expanded partnerships with Tinder, where users can display a 'verified human' badge, and the introduction of 'Concert Kit' to combat scalper bots. The company is also collaborating with Razer, Mythical Games, and Reddit on gaming and online community integrations, and with Zoom on a 'Deep Face' feature to verify meeting participants' humanity. Furthermore, World is working with Docusign to incorporate proof-of-human checks into digital agreements and rolling out 'AgentKit' to allow developers to attach human-verified credentials to agents for sensitive actions and agent-based commerce. The company is partnering with firms like Okta, Vercel, and Browserbase to establish a trust layer for automated workflows without requiring personal data. Sam Altman, co-founder of World, stated that 'World ID is on the way to being a real human network for the internet.'
