The World digital identity project, backed by Sam Altman, has introduced its most substantial upgrade to the World ID system, positioning it as a comprehensive 'proof of human' infrastructure designed for individuals, enterprises, and AI agents. This major overhaul, announced in San Francisco, addresses growing concerns within the tech industry regarding the impersonation of humans online by bots, deepfakes, and AI agents. The World ID system utilizes custom 'Orb' devices to establish proof of humanity, requiring users to visit an Orb in person for facial and iris scanning to generate a unique cryptographic code. This code is then anonymized and distributed across a network to confirm the user's uniqueness without revealing their identity. Critics have raised concerns about the use of biometric data in this process. The update focuses on enhancing privacy, security, and usability, with new features such as account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app is also being introduced to allow users to manage their credentials and authenticate across various platforms seamlessly. The company is expanding its partnerships with consumer platforms like Tinder, where users can display a 'verified human' badge, and is working on tools to combat scalper bots in ticket reservations for events. Additionally, World is collaborating with Zoom to verify the humanity of meeting participants and with Docusign to incorporate proof-of-human checks into digital agreements.
