Bitcoin Price Drops Below $74,000 After Failing to Break Through Resistance

The price of bitcoin experienced a rapid decline in US morning trading on Thursday, dropping 2% in a matter of minutes after failing to breach the resistance level that has been forming. Bitcoin's value fell to approximately $73,500 during the US morning session, resulting in a loss of over 1% in the past 24 hours. This downturn occurred after the cryptocurrency once again struggled to surpass the $75,000 mark. In tandem with the stock market's remarkable rally, which reached record highs for the Nasdaq and S&P 500 on the previous day, experiencing a pause. Both indices were down by about 0.1% just over an hour into the session. Stocks linked to the crypto market also declined across the board, with Coinbase, Strategy, Robinhood, and Circle all experiencing losses of roughly 2%-3% during morning trading. Meanwhile, crude oil prices rose by about 2%, regaining the $90 level, as ongoing geopolitical tensions continued to fuel supply concerns. The $75,000-$76,000 range holds significant importance for bitcoin, as this was the level at which it traded prior to the market crash on February 5 that sent BTC down to $60,000. Surpassing this level could indicate a larger move that might bring prices back to around the $90,000 mark, which was bitcoin's starting point for the year. In related news, the correlation between bitcoin and software stocks, which had been moving in tandem prior to the conflict in the Middle East at the end of February, has been disrupted. Although bitcoin has gained over 11% since the conflict began, while the software ETF, IGV, has risen by roughly 2%, the narrative that bitcoin was decoupling from software equities has been challenged. Over the past five days, IGV has caught up, rising by as much as 11%, while bitcoin has remained flat. This suggests that rather than a clean decoupling, software stocks may have simply been lagging behind bitcoin and are now catching up. On Thursday, IGV was up 1%, while bitcoin was down 1.5%.
