Sam Altman's World Project Unveils Significant Upgrade to Combat Deepfakes and Bots

World, a digital identity project backed by Sam Altman, has announced its most substantial upgrade to its World ID system, positioning it as a comprehensive 'proof of human' infrastructure for individuals, businesses, and AI agents. This major overhaul, revealed at a San Francisco event, aims to address growing concerns within the tech industry about bots, deepfakes, and AI agents impersonating humans online. Altman is also known for his involvement in OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT and other large language model AI tools. The World ID system utilizes custom-built 'Orb' devices to establish a 'proof-of-humanity' by scanning a user's face and iris to generate a unique cryptographic code. This code is then processed, with the images being deleted and only anonymized fragments being sent across a distributed network to verify the user's uniqueness without revealing their identity. Critics have raised concerns about the use of biometric scanning via the Orb. The update focuses on improving privacy, security, and usability with a redesigned architecture, introducing features such as account-based identity, multi-key support, and recovery mechanisms. A dedicated World ID app is also being introduced, currently in beta, which will enable users to manage their credentials and authenticate across different platforms seamlessly. World is expanding its integrations with consumer platforms, including Tinder, where users can display a 'verified human' badge, and is working with companies like Razer and Mythical Games for gaming and online communities. Enterprise use cases are also a key focus, with partnerships involving Zoom for verifying meeting participants and Docusign for incorporating proof-of-human checks into digital agreements.
