Ethereum Co-Founder Joseph Lubin Highlights the Risks of Centralized AI Control

The next significant turning point for crypto is expected to come from advancements in artificial intelligence, according to Joseph Lubin, CEO of Consensys and co-founder of Ethereum. In a conversation with CoinDesk, Lubin emphasized the potential of autonomous agents to interact, coordinate, and verify transactions on decentralized networks, utilizing crypto infrastructure as the foundation for machine-driven activities. He expressed sympathy for the notion that blockchain technology is particularly suited for machine intelligences but does not foresee humans being replaced. Instead, increasingly sophisticated interfaces will simplify complexity, allowing users to engage with crypto systems through intent rather than manual inputs, thereby positioning AI as an intermediary layer between humans and protocols. However, this vision is accompanied by risks, notably the concentration of AI infrastructure among a few large tech firms, which could pose significant challenges. Lubin underscored the importance of decentralized systems and cryptography in ensuring accountability and enabling transparent, verifiable environments where machines can 'check on one another.' Products like MetaMask are evolving to reflect this shift, with Lubin describing it as a 'new kind of neobank that you own and control,' part of a transition toward a 'personal money operating system' where AI-powered agents can manage assets and execute transactions on behalf of users. The Ethereum ecosystem is also witnessing structural changes, with the expected rise of 'corporate chains' as companies seek higher throughput and greater control over their infrastructure. Lubin advocated for issuing assets on Ethereum's base layer to ensure durability, even if they are later used across other networks. Stablecoins, while part of this transition, are seen as a stepping stone toward more fully decentralized financial systems. The growth in decentralized collateral is expected to enable more robust, crypto-native forms of money. Lubin also touched upon the convergence of traditional finance and decentralized finance, suggesting that this blend of centuries-old financial innovation with newer blockchain-based systems will lead to a more granular and programmable global economy. On the topic of quantum computing, Lubin adopted a measured stance, viewing it as a manageable, long-term issue that Ethereum developers have been preparing for over the years.
