Ethereum Sees Record-Breaking Quarter with Over 200 Million Transactions
The world's largest smart contract blockchain, Ethereum, has achieved its busiest quarter on record, with its native token's price remaining steady. In Q1 2026, the network processed 200.4 million transactions, a first-time milestone, according to Artemis data. This marks a significant increase from the 2023 low of approximately 90 million quarterly transactions, which then plateaued between 100 million and 120 million throughout most of 2024. Ethereum's smart contract system enables the automated execution of agreements without intermediaries, securely recording actions such as token transfers and smart contract interactions on the blockchain. The resurgence in Ethereum's on-chain activity began in mid-2025, with each quarter showing higher activity, culminating in a 43% jump in Q1 2026 from the previous quarter's 145 million transactions. Despite this growth, the native token ether has declined over 50% from its August 2025 peak of nearly $5,000, potentially presenting a trading opportunity based on fundamental growth. Much of the network's activity occurs on Layer 2s, which process transactions at a lower cost before batching them to the main chain for settlement. Stablecoins, tokenized versions of fiat currencies, are also widely used on Ethereum, with a record $180 billion total supply, accounting for approximately 60% of the global stablecoin market. Both trends contribute to higher transaction counts on the base layer through settlement and bridging activity. However, some analysts warn that Layer 2 activity may mask base-layer fee pressure, as Ethereum earns less per transaction following the Dencun upgrade. The broader outlook suggests that Ethereum's usage has undergone a multi-year recovery, which typically precedes price movement. Whether this quarter marks an inflection point or the top of a local cycle depends on whether the 200 million transaction figure is sustained in Q2 and driven by genuine user growth rather than bot activity.
